%X Most landscapes are influenced by human action and the resulting mosaic of landscapes is a blend of natural and man-made elements that vary in size, shape and arrangement. This measures used to describe their standards can be applied in the analysis of its structure. This study aimed to analyze the environmental quality of the vegetation of São Carlos between the years 2003 and 2013, through the use of vegetation indices. Through the Environmental Quality of Water Resources Index and Environmental Quality Vegetation Index it was identified a reduction in areas of native vegetation over time with expansion of agricultural areas, mainly related to sugarcane cultivation, causing the reduction of the environmental quality of the landscape. The municipality, in addition to losing areas of natural vegetation also lost environmental quality of the remnants that remained over time, with a loss of 3067 hectares of native vegetation between 2003 and 2013. This loss, which is directly correlated with the decrease environmental quality of various environmental compartments, and the quality of water resources, later observed by the environmental quality Index of water resources. The growth of human activities and the loss of natural areas can lead to total municipal biodiversity and consequently the loss of environmental functions and the benefits they provide, which serve as support for maintenance of urban and agricultural activities in general.
